Young children live in an imaginary world. That's one of the best things about being around them: their innocence and belief that the world is a good place, where the mean guys always lose and life is simple.
They spend a lot of time pretending to be something or someone else: superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, kittens, or cowboys/girls.
And despite our efforts to equalize role opportunities among the genders, any parent will tell you that boys often choose to be or someone or something that fights evil, (or just fights in general): Superman, a monster, a Ninja, a T.
Rex. It seems to be their nature.
Girls, on the other hand, still love to be princesses, ballerinas, fairies, mermaids-- whatever is whimsical and beautiful.
Even when planning weddings, the princess thing still holds true for many brides.
This fantasy dies hard.
Ballerinas are especially popular for little girls.
They love the idea of dressing up in white or pink frilly costumes and gliding delicately and gracefully across a stage.
(Whether they can actually do that is another matter, but the issue is how they feel about themselves.
) Parents still love to take their little girls to The Nutcracker and little girls still love to be taken.
Ballet classes for little ones are still crowded, and shows like Angelina Ballerina are still a hit.
If you are thinking of incorporating this theme into your daughter's bedroom, there are definitely some good choices out there.
Probably the best place to start would be with a bedding set.
White and pink tend to be the predominant colors for this theme, but you'll also find other pastel colors, like lavendar, yellow, and pale green as accent colors. You can paint the walls of the room basically any shade that's on the quilt; going a few tones lighter or darker will add some contrast to the room. Painting the walls a few different colors, or three white walls and one accent color, are possibilities also.
You can go to any paint store and get cards with colors on them; they often come in color families, so you can make sure you're choosing colors that will work with the bedding set and the room.
Accessorizing will be easy.
Sometimes the bedding has matching accessories available; and finding things to go with the pastel colors of the bedding, like storage bins, a lamp, curtains, won't be hard.
As long as the colors are in the quilt, you're okay, and white is always a great option.
It matches anything.
Our little girls will not be little for very long.
Let's let them enjoy it.
And let's enjoy it ourselves. So, take them to ballet class or The Nutcracker.
Let them play dress-up with ballet costumes and princess outfits. Help make them feel loved and cherished. I think that's the appeal: feeling loved and cherished. And isn't that what we want for our daughters?
